About
Anglo-Saxon Translator is a workbench for trying Old English translation and checking the results — not a black box that asks for your trust.
What this site is
- A translator that produces AI drafts between Modern English and Old English, always labelled as drafts.
- A small, hand-curated dictionary whose entries cite published sources you can open yourself.
- Reference pages — the alphabet and keyboard, phrases and guides — that distinguish attested text from adapted examples and AI output.
The site exists because “Old English” tools often blur three different things — the Anglo-Saxon language, Shakespearean-style writing, and blackletter fonts — and rarely say how confident you should be. Here, every piece of Old English carries a label, and the methodology says plainly what has and has not been verified.
What this site is not
- Not a certified translation service. Drafts are for exploration and study; verify anything permanent against the cited sources.
- Not a Shakespearean or “thee/thou” generator — that is Early Modern English, a different stage of the language. See the comparison guide.
- Not a font tool. “Old English fonts” restyle modern letters; they do not change the language.
- Not an academic institution or a scholarly edition. We cite scholarship; we do not replace it.
Who runs it
This is a small independent project. There is no research team, university or institute behind it, and we will not invent one — instead, content pages name their sources so you can check every claim yourself. Questions and corrections are welcome via the contact page.
